Democrat Doug Jones won a remarkable upset victory over controversial rival Roy Moore in the diehard Republican state of Alabama on Tuesday to win election to the US Senate. His victory by a margin of 49.5 to 48.9 with 91% of precincts reporting set off a political earthquake dealing a major blow to Donald Trump and his efforts to pass tax reform on Capitol Hill. Jones was able to become the first Democrat in a decade to win any statewide office in Alabama by beating Moore who had faced multiple allegations of sexual assault during a campaign which exposed Republican party faultlines. Moore who late on Tuesday was refusing to concede the race had been favored in the deep red state until two women came forward to claim that Moore assaulted them when they were teenagers and a number of others said that the Alabama Republican had romantically pursued them when they were underage. According to an exit poll Jones won 95% of the African-American vote but only 27% of the white vote in the Yellowhammer State. However heavy African-American turnout on Jones s behalf overcame Moore s margins in rural predominantly white parts of Alabama. Jones also made significant inroads among college educated whites. He won well-educated Madison County by a margin of 57-40. A center of the aerospace industry Trump won the county by a margin of 55-38 in 2016. More in common than what would divide us Jones emerged to a euphoric reception just before 10pm local time. Folks I gotta tell you I think that I have been waiting all my life and now I just don t know what the hell to say he said beginning a 10-minute speech. I have always believed that the people of Alabama had more in common than what would divide us. The election had never been either about him or Moore he insisted. This entire race has been about dignity and respect. This campaign has been about the rule of law. This campaign has been about common courtesy and decency and making sure everyone in this state regardless of what zip code you live in is going to get a fair shake. The Democratic victory will reduce the Republican majority in the Senate to 51-49 once Jones takes his seat on Capitol Hill. This significantly reduces the margin for error as Republicans attempt to push through a major corporate tax cut. They already have one defector in senator Bob Corker and Jones s election means a single additional Republican breaking ranks would sink the legislation. Moore s defeat also marks a major political blow to Trump who endorsed the Alabama Republican and held a rally on his behalf just over the state line in Pensacola Florida. Although most national Republicans rushed to distance themselves from Moore in the aftermath of the allegations Trump reaffirmed his support through tweets and public statements. Shortly after the results were called Tuesday Trump tweeted his congratulations to Jones: Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) Congratulations to Doug Jones on a hard fought victory. The write-in votes played a very big factor but a win is a win. The people of Alabama are great and the Republicans will have another shot at this seat in a very short period of time. It never ends! December 13 2017 Moore s defeat is a significant blow to the efforts by Steve Bannon and the populist Trump wing of the Republican party to undermine Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell. Campaign chairman Bill Armistead took the stage to insist that the evening is not over yet and to cite Alabama s provision for an automatic recount of the result is within one half of a percentage point. He also noted optimistically that there were still outstanding military ballots. Moore then took the stage to say: When the vote is this close it s not over. He then bemoaned that he had been painted in an unfavorable and unfaithful light before urging attendees to go home and go to sleep. Cal Zastrow a friend of Moore who had come down from Michigan to volunteer for the campaign tried to frame the results within a bigger picture. There were hugs smiles tears and chants of We want Doug! The raw emotion was evident. John Parker 26 a bartender said: I think it s astounding and unprecedented in Alabama politics and response to what we re seeing nationally. This is a direct response President Trump. Roy Moore is unfit for any job let alone a public servant. Alabama tonight voted for America. He added: There is hope and joy. Tomorrow s another day in Alabama. Roy Moore s campaign manager has said the candidate is not yet conceding the US Senate race to winner Democrat Doug Jones and is asking his supporters to pray for him. Rich Hobson told a sombre crowd at Mr Moore s election night gathering that: Some people are calling it. We are not calling it. Mr Hobson said the margin is thin and there are still votes to be counted. Mr Moore also came out on stage and said that he would not be conceding telling campaign supporters it s not over. Campaign chairman Bill Armistead says that because the vote is close and approaching the state s recount requirement we do not have a final decision on the outcome. Alabama state law calls for a recount if the margin of victory is less than one-half of one percentage point. With all precincts reporting Jones leads by 1.5 percentage points three times what s required to trigger a recount. If the secretary of state determines there were more write-in votes than the difference between Mr Jones and Mr Moore the state s counties would be required to tally those votes. It s not clear how that would help Mr Moore who ended the night trailing Mr Jones by more than 20 000 votes. As a Republican running in deeply conservative Alabama Mr Moore was initially seen as all but certain to win his campaign. But the race was upended by a series of women alleging that Mr Moore had made advances on them when he was in his 30s and they were teenagers including multiple women who accused him of assault one when she was 14 years old. Mr Moore has always adamantly denied all allegations saying that I have never engaged in sexual misconduct and decrying what he called a partisan effort to derail his campaign. Senate Leader Mitch McConnell called on him to leave the race prompting Mr Moore to turn his fire on the Republican establishment and on the eve of the election senior Alabama Senator Richard Shelby said Alabama deserves better and relayed he had not voted for Mr Moore. Should Mr Moore prevail Republicans will be faced with a decision they have spent weeks bracing for: how to treat a new member of their caucus who despite being crucial to their slender majority is saddled with politically explosive allegations. In the lead-up to the election senators had discussed launching an ethics investigation or even voting to expel Mr Moore should he win. But even as Mr McConnell and others sought to distance themselves from Mr Moore the embattled candidate was buoyed by support from other quarters of the party. After initially severing ties the Republican National Committee reversed itself and again directed funding to Mr Moore. Even before sexual misconduct allegations against Mr Moore emerged he was a controversial figure. He was twice removed from the Alabama Supreme Court for defying the law once for refusing to take down a monument to the Ten Commandments and once for ordering state judges to enforce Alabama s ban on same-sex marriage despite the United States Supreme Court overruling state law in declaring same-sex marriage legal. He has also argued a Muslim elected official should not be allowed serve in Congress embraced a discredited conspiracy theory by questioning whether Barack Obama was born in the United States and called homosexual conduct abhorrent and a crime against nature that should be illegal. Like much of the Republican establishment Mr Trump backed the more moderate Republican Luther Strange in the primary election before swinging his support to Mr Moore after he won the party s nomination. A triumph for decency and common sense in a state that seemed for a time at risk of abandoning both Mr. Jones s win narrows the Republicans Senate majority and delivers a deeply deserved rebuke to President Trump. It is hard to get too intoxicated by a slim victory over an atrocious candidate a suspected sexual abuser with bigoted politics but Alabama the Senate and the nation will be a whole lot better off with Mr. Jones than with Roy Moore.Alabama s deep-red politics argued against Mr. Jones s chances. A former federal prosecutor Mr. Jones won convictions of two Ku Klux Klan members for the 1963 bombing of Birmingham s 16th Street Baptist Church that killed four girls and no Democrat had won a Senate race in two decades. But a report in The Washington Post in which four women accused Mr. Moore of sexually harassing or abusing them as teenagers turned the race into a close contest. Mr. Jones s victory came thanks to overwhelming support from Alabama s African-American voters.Mr. Jones received support from various luminaries including Barack Obama as well as an unexpected assist from Alabama s senior senator Richard Shelby a Republican. I couldn t vote for Roy Moore Mr. Shelby said. The state of Alabama deserves better. Maybe it shouldn t count as statesmanship to oppose a cartoonishly unfit candidate but during the degrading and hyperpolitical Trump presidency it does.Mr. Moore s campaign has been a shame for Alabama one of the nation s poorest states whose need for better-paying jobs health care education and infrastructure he almost entirely neglected. He did not abandon the race even as the sex abuse charges multiplied; instead aided by the political nihilist Steve Bannon he doubled down insisting the women were lying part of a plot by the establishment and fake news to prevent him from changing Washington. I could tell you what I saw but I don t want to Staehle first told the crowd gathered in a large rustic barn used for weddings before divulging some details. There were certainly pretty girls. And they were girls. They were young. Some were probably very young. But as a testament to Moore who has been accused by multiple women of sexual harassment and assault while they were teens the candidate said We shouldn t be here I m leaving according to Staehle s account. That was Roy honorable disciplined morally straight highly principled Staehle said.Next to speak was Moore s wife Kayla who tsk-tsked the fake news suggesting it was the media s fault that people think her husband doesn t support the black community nor do they like Jews. I tell you all this because I see you all and I want to set the record straight while they re here she said motioning to the slew of journalists at the back of the room during the election eve event. At what point does corporate America start disinvesting in the Republican party? Not any time soon seems to be the answer. Having rushed a tax bill through the Senate that will deliver tens of billions in tax cuts to rich people and corporations why should it bother the average business owner if the Republicans want to put an Islamophobe into the Senate to represent Alabama? Roy Moore who is expected to win Tuesday s special election hit the headlines after several women came forward to allege that he had sexually assaulted them in the 1970s while they were in their teens. Moore denies this saying the accusations are a conspiracy by lesbians gays bisexuals and socialists a claim made from the pulpit of an evangelical church. He has refused to debate with his Democratic party opponent on the grounds that he has supported transgender rights. After the allegations surfaced 37% of white evangelical voters in the state said it made them more likely to support Moore. In an interview televised on C-Span Moore added: It is immoral. It is defined by the law as detestable. September 11 attacks as divine punishment In a speech in February Moore appeared to suggest that the terrorist attacks of September 11 were the result of divine retribution against the United States and prophesized in the Book of Isaiah. In comments first reported by CNN Moore quoted Isaiah 30:12-13 saying: Because you have despised His word and trust in perverseness and oppression and say thereon ... therefore this iniquity will be to you as a breach ready to fall swell out in a high wall whose breaking cometh suddenly at an instance. Reds and yellows At a rally earlier in September Moore talked about reds and yellows fighting while discussing racial division in the United States. Moore justified this on Twitter by citing lyrics from the song Jesus Loves the Little Children. He wrote Red yellow black and white they are precious in His sight. Jesus loves the little children of the world. This is the Gospel. Tracking livestock is communism In 2006 Moore condemned a proposal for a national ID system for animals as more identifiable with communism than free enterprise . The proposal received attention after a cow in Alabama had been diagnosed with mad cow disease. Moore who was then running for governor was skeptical that the outbreak was real. Although the Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell called for Moore to stand down Donald Trump has supported him. Ousted strategist Steve Bannon previously executive chairman of controversial rightwing news site Breitbart has harangued rallies in Moore s support. But the core activists supporting Moore come from networks including the League of the South a white nationalist group that wants to re-form the Confederacy and extreme anti-abortion activists who justify killing medics who work at abortion clinics. What matters to these people is not only defeating the Democrats it is widening the scope for defying rights for women and minorities guaranteed at a federal level. What is happening to the Republicans under Trump is a process whereby the base radicalises the establishment and the establishment then feels empowered to begin dismantling aspects of democracy. Moore has stated that the last time the US was great was at the time when families were united even though we had slavery although not the families of black people which were of course torn apart. However the historical parallels are more recent. In his study of the rise of Nazism and the fall of the Weimar republic the leftwing German historian Hans Mommsen identified three destabilisers defying the textbook explanation that Nazis were evil and the German bourgeoisie naive . The first was the rise of conservative paramilitary combat leagues numbering at least 400 000 before the Nazi brownshirts took off. Although their aim was always declared to be keeping order the combat leagues created a paralysis in the official policing structures that the Nazis exploited in their march to power. The second was the corruption of the judiciary. In a series of court cases most notably when they upheld the libellous charge that the moderate socialist leader Friedrich Ebert had committed treason the German courts eviscerated the republican constitution on which Weimar democracy had been based. The third destabiliser was the resort to rule by decree under conservative chancellors after 1930 sidelining the elected parliament again with the approval of the courts. Following this process through the collapse of Weimar democracy the Nazi years in power and the Holocaust Mommsen dubbed it cumulative radicalisation . Far from exhibiting naivety the German business class became increasingly complicit in hollowing out parliamentary democracy always under the pressure of a radical plebeian racist voting base. It is hard to look at the US today without seeing the cumulative radicalisation of the right: there are militias not just of the classic gun-toting variety but regimented groups of younger more urbanised men mobilised via internet message boards devoted to violent misogyny and racism such as the Proud Boys. There are figures such as Moore prepared to defy the constitution and a network of more than 200 law enforcers in the constitutional sheriffs movement which claims that an elected local sheriff should be able to overrule federal law. And now we have the beginnings of rule by diktat not only in the frequent presidential decrees and arbitrary sackings of officials by the White House but in Congress itself. The Republicans sprang a massive and detailed amendment to the tax bill just a few hours before it was due to be voted on. Trump s Treasury secretary Steve Mnuchin has offered scant analysis of the effects on debt or distribution arising from the new tax bill and deleted a study from the Treasury website that was implicitly critical. The normal processes of democracy are being short-circuited. A victory for Moore on Tuesday will up the tempo of rightwing radicalisation. Nobody needs to say that a new secession by the south as his backers want is impossible or that a US run by local sheriffs in defiance of the federal courts is a neofascist fantasy. These are signifiers for a more practical programme of tolerance for racist policing limits on abortion rights and the shrinkage of the state. In most global corporations the language Moore and his supporters use could not even be uttered in the restrooms let alone the boardroom. Yet US business carries on giving money to the Republicans and receiving its rewards twenty-fold in the form of tax giveaways. It is an implicit deal that does not seem to trouble the well-heeled coastal conservative elite enough to make them do anything other than signal distaste. Unfortunately distaste does not uphold the rule of law nor keep ethnic supremacists in check.
