Karnataka police officer D Roopa is facing a Rs 20-crore defamation suit from her senior HN Sathyanarayana Rao after claiming that he had been bribed to allow All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader VK Sasikala to get special facilities in Bengaluru s Parappana Agrahara jail NDTV reported on Tuesday.In July D Roopa who was then the deputy inspector general of police posted in the prisons department had said in a report that Sasikala serving a four-year jail term for corruption had paid for perks including an exclusive kitchen and relaxed visiting hours.Roopa had also referred to rumours that one of the people bribed was her senior Rao. There were rumours that Rs 2 crore was paid for this Sasikala s privileges and unfortunately the allegation is against you Roopa had said in the report that she handed to Rao.Rao who retired as director general of police in August filed the defamation case this week months after demanding that Roopa should apologise for making baseless allegations . Rao said Roopa s allegations were false and caused severe damage to his name fame and integrity . He had asked Roopa to get the apology published in all leading newspapers within three days. After the report both Rao and Roopa were transferred out of the prisons department. Rao was asked to go on leave while the Karnataka government moved Roopa to the traffic department NDTV reported. Roopa has refused to retract her allegations. She also referred in her report to rumours that a beneficiary of a fat bribe to buy Sasikala s comfort was her senior HNS Rao. There were rumours that 2 crore was paid for this (Sasikala s privileges) and unfortunately the allegation is against you Roopa had said in the report she handed to her boss.The sensational claim resulted in both HNS Rao and Roopa being transferred from the Bengaluru prison and an inquiry.Mr Rao who was asked to go on leave claimed the wild and baseless allegations caused severe damage to his name fame and integrity apart from causing mental agony to him.The Karnataka government moved Roopa to the traffic department but she refused to take back her allegations. GURGAON: At a time when the Gurgaon police are reeling under manpower crunch the department has planned to start a special recruitment drive from December 1. Officials confirmed that retired jawans of CISF will be hired on contractual basis for 25 posts to help cops manage traffic and maintain law and order in the city. The recruitment drive will be held in the police commissioner s office in Gurgaon and will be carried out by the police commissioner the deputy commissioner of the respective police district and an inspector. The rules of reservation for backward castes will also be applicable. A police spokesperson said that those hired will not get posted in their home jurisdiction but in a nearby police station on a monthly salary of Rs 14 000. They could also be transferred to any other district in the state in case of an emergency. The rules for leave and compensation of the new recruits will be the same as that of the state police. The recruits will also be given a 15-day capsule course to orient them into guard duty patrolling travelling and law and order related duties which they will be utilised for. Gurgaon police has a total of 4 992 sanctioned posts of which 900 posts have been lying vacant an RTI revealed. According to police figures 551 posts of constables 464 posts of head constables 44 posts of sub-inspectors and 25 posts of assistant sub-inspectors have been lying vacant. While the city recently opened up as many as 11 new police stations and several police posts the existing manpower was split between the nearest police station to suit the manpower requirement. The split has further burdened our functioning. We have to investigate a large number of cases and also deploy patrolling duties for PCRs and riders which eats up a lot of force said a senior officer who did not wish to be named. The director general of police BS Sandhu during his recent visit to the city had said that 1 000 cops will be posted in the city to add to the existing manpower. However a senior police officer claimed that these 1 000 cops are currently undergoing training in the police training academy in Madhuban. DEHRADUN: A day after a 27-year-old software engineer was found shot dead at Clock Tower Dehradun police was scrambling for clues on Tuesday. New details however have emerged in the case which police believe may be crucial in cracking the murder of Yatin Verma who was employed with a private company in Noida. Verma s body was discovered on Monday morning with gunshot wounds at Clock Tower and stone s throw away from a police post. Police said that initial investigation suggests that the man was struggling with drug addiction which likely plunged him into financial stress so much so that he couldn t even afford a cellphone. Ashok Kumar additional director general of police (ADG) Law and Order said We can t confirm anything at this moment as investigation is still going on. But the initial probe shows that Verma was struggling with drug addiction and was under financial strain. The ADG said He did not have a mobile phone and would frequently use other people s cellphones to call his family. His parents kept asking him to buy a phone but he did not do so. Verma is a native of Bageshwar district in Kumaon and was staying in Dehradun since November 14 without the knowledge of his family. A senior police officer said We are trying to find out why he was staying in Dehradun and the people he had met. The ADG said that another reason to believe Verma was facing financial crunch is that he had rented a shabby room in a lodge near ISBT. Verma completed his schooling from Dehradun and pursued BTech from a private university in Jalandhar in Punjab. According to police he was killed by a gunshot at some other place and then the body was dumped near New Empire theatre. While performing the punchnama police also recovered a live cartridge from the pocket of Verma s trousers. CHANDIGARH: Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar said on Monday that the state government has decided to launch 100 Dial Scheme to reduce criminal cases and to provide fair justice to victims. Initially 600 vehicles would be provided by the state government to police and each district would get 30 to 35 vehicles. The chief minister who was speaking after inaugurating eight Mitra Kaksh in Civil Lines Police Station Karnal on Monday said that the state government has been providing fearless environment in the state. He said that these eight Mitra Kaksh have been established at a cost of about Rs two crore to develop coordination among people and police. He said that residents of Community Liaison Group and police personnel without uniform would sit in these Mitra Kaksh to listen to the grievances of people. If a grievance could not be solved through mediation then FIR would be registered. He said that in the first phase eight Mitra Kaksh each were being established in district Karnal and district Rohtak. If the system runs successfully it would be implemented throughout the state he added. Referring to his visit to Singapore the chief minister said that there was no police station on road in Singapore and no police personnel could be seen on roads. Though there was one police officer on a population of 300 persons whereas in Haryana one police officer is deputed for safety and security of 500 persons. He said that during his visit to Singapore he learned that police personnel in Singapore perform their duty in civil dress also. Speaking on the occasion home secretary S.S. Prasad said that during pre-independence period police were engaged to run a government but post-independence police was being used to serve the people. Director General of Police B.S. CHENNAI: The BJP youth wing and party members on Monday asked Tamil Nadu director general of police T K Rajendran to take action against a social activist in the city who they said was slandering BJP president Amit Shah on social media by implicating him in the 2014 death of Brijgopal Harkishan Loya the judge presiding over the Sohrabuddin Sheikh trial in the CBI special court in Mumbai. Speaking to reporters after submitting a petition to the DGP Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha president (Tamil Nadu) Vinoj P Selvam said Piyush Manish had in posts on his Facebook page cited a magazine report to hold Shah responsible for the death of the 48-year-old judge in Nagpur on December 1 2014.
